Jean Metzinger, a central figure in the development of Cubism, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with geometric form and multiple perspectives. The composition presents a still life arranged upon a table, positioned before a window that looks out onto an urban architectural setting. Metzinger employs the analytical techniques of the movement, breaking down the objects into faceted planes that overlap and intersect. The central vase, rendered in a deep red, acts as the anchor for the composition. Surrounding it are various domestic items, including a glass, a spoon, and a newspaper bearing the text 'L'HEURE'.
