Description
An engraving by Lucas van Leyden depicting the allegorical figure of Temperance, shown pouring water into a bowl to represent moderation.
This engraving by Lucas van Leyden depicts the personification of Temperance, one of the four cardinal virtues. The central figure is a female nude, shown pouring water from a jug into a shallow bowl. This action, the dilution of wine with water, serves as the traditional iconographic representation of moderation and self-restraint. Above her, a small putto holds a bridle, a further symbol of control over one's impulses and passions.
Lucas van Leyden was a master of the burin, and this work demonstrates his technical precision. The composition is structured around a classical architectural setting, featuring a column and a draped curtain that frame the figure. The artist employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching to model the form of the body and the texture of the drapery, creating a sense of volume and weight. The figure stands in a relaxed contrapposto, a pose that reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance art on Northern European printmakers of the early sixteenth century.
As a member of the Dutch school, van Leyden was known for his ability to combine narrative detail with a clear, balanced arrangement of space. The inscription 'TEMPERANCIA' at the base and the artist's characteristic 'L' monogram identify this as part of a series dedicated to the virtues. The print is executed on paper, with the lines of the engraving providing a crisp, defined quality that is characteristic of the medium. The work offers a clear view into the moralising themes prevalent in European art during the period, where abstract concepts were frequently given human form to provide visual guidance for the viewer.
