Ivan Aivazovsky, a master of marine art, produced this depiction of a maritime disaster in 1851. The composition captures the raw power of the sea during a storm, a recurring subject throughout his career. Aivazovsky spent much of his life in Feodosia, Crimea, where his observations of the Black Sea informed his ability to render the movement of water, the transparency of waves, and the atmospheric effects of light through mist and spray.
