This albumen silver print by Kusakabe Kimbei captures the architectural detail of a temple gate in the Shiba district of Tokyo. During the late nineteenth century, Kimbei operated a successful photography studio in Yokohama, catering to both domestic clients and the growing number of international travellers visiting Japan. His work often documented the country's traditional architecture and daily life, providing a visual record of sites that were undergoing rapid modernisation during the Meiji period.

The composition focuses on the stone steps leading to an ornate wooden gate, a structure typical of the Zojoji Temple complex in Shiba. The surrounding foliage, including the prominent palm tree on the left, frames the entrance, creating a sense of depth and scale.
