This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Yaozō III. Sharaku is known for his brief but intense period of activity in the mid-1790s, during which he produced a series of actor portraits that departed from the idealised depictions common in the ukiyo-e genre. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that emphasised the specific, often exaggerated, facial features and expressions of his subjects.

The composition features two figures. The seated actor is dressed in a patterned kimono with a red outer garment, his hand resting upon the hilt of a sword. Behind him stands a second figure, captured in a moment of tension. The use of a mica background, or kirazuri, provides a shimmering, metallic surface that elevates the print beyond standard commercial production. The lines are sharp and deliberate, defining the folds of the garments and the distinct contours of the actors' faces.

Sharaku's work is characterised by this psychological intensity. Rather than presenting a generic mask of a character, he captures the actor in a specific pose, often mid-performance. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo-period woodblock process, with clear registration of the various colour blocks. The colour palette is restrained, relying on deep reds, greys, and muted tones to focus the viewer's attention on the dramatic interaction between the two figures. This print is a representative example of the yakusha-e, or actor print, which formed a significant portion of the output of the ukiyo-e school during the late eighteenth century. It offers a glimpse into the theatrical culture of the period, where the popularity of kabuki actors drove a demand for high-quality, mass-produced imagery.
