This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Sawamura Sojuro III. Produced during the Edo period, the work captures the specific theatricality of the kabuki stage. Sharaku is known for his unconventional approach to portraiture, often exaggerating facial features to convey the psychological intensity of the performer rather than a strictly idealised likeness.

The composition features a standing figure positioned behind a seated actor. The standing figure wears a kimono decorated with a geometric pattern, while the seated actor is dressed in a dark garment adorned with cherry blossom motifs. The use of a mica background, a technique known as kirazuri, provides a metallic sheen that separates the subjects from the surrounding space. This choice of background was a hallmark of high-quality ukiyo-e prints, intended to add a sense of luxury and depth to the scene.

Sharaku was active for a very brief period, roughly ten months in 1794 and 1795. Despite this short career, his prints remain some of the most recognisable examples of the ukiyo-e genre. His work deviates from the standard aesthetic of his contemporaries, who often prioritised grace and beauty. Instead, Sharaku focused on the raw, sometimes grotesque, reality of the actor's expression. The colour palette is restrained, relying on deep blacks, muted reds, and greens to create a sense of balance against the shimmering grey background. This print offers a glimpse into the world of 18th-century Japanese theatre, documenting the performers who defined the cultural life of Edo.
