Hans Memling, a master of the Early Netherlandish tradition, produced this depiction of the Annunciation during the late fifteenth century. The composition adheres to the conventions of the period, placing the sacred event within a domestic interior. The Virgin Mary sits at the right, her posture modest as she receives the message from the Archangel Gabriel. Two additional angels accompany the scene, one assisting with the Virgin's mantle while the other observes from behind.

Memling employs a meticulous approach to detail, characteristic of his training in Bruges. The textures of the heavy, gold-embroidered brocade worn by Gabriel contrast with the soft, flowing folds of Mary's white gown and dark blue mantle. The interior space is defined by a tiled floor and a wooden cabinet, upon which sit a glass carafe and a candle. A vase containing lilies, a traditional symbol of purity, occupies the foreground. Above the Virgin, a dove representing the Holy Spirit descends within a circular halo, connecting the divine realm to the earthly setting.

The lighting is soft and even, typical of the Northern Renaissance style, which prioritises clarity and the observation of light reflecting off various surfaces. The red bed hangings provide a strong colour contrast to the cooler tones of the angels' wings and the Virgin's attire. Memling avoids excessive drama, opting instead for a quiet, contemplative mood. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance narrative clarity with decorative precision. The figures possess a gentle, idealised quality, and the spatial arrangement creates a sense of order within the room.
