The scene depicts the moment of the Annunciation, where the Archangel Gabriel kneels before the Virgin Mary.

Fouquet places the figures within a classical interior defined by heavy, gilded columns and a vaulted ceiling. The architectural setting reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance design, which Fouquet encountered during his travels. Through the central opening, a glimpse of a distant, serene landscape provides a contrast to the structured interior. The Virgin Mary is draped in a deep blue mantle, her posture modest as she reads from a book placed upon a lectern. Above, the Holy Spirit, represented by a dove, descends towards her.

Small putti are positioned along the upper architectural frieze, holding scrolls that bear inscriptions. The bottom of the frame includes Latin text, a common feature in devotional manuscripts of this period. The colour palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones of the stone architecture, contrasted against the cool, saturated blue of the Virgin's robes and the soft white of the angel's garments. The precision of the brushwork and the careful application of gold leaf indicate the high status of the patron and the skill of the artist. This work remains a primary example of mid-fifteenth-century French illumination, combining traditional religious iconography with the emerging interest in spatial depth and classical form.
