This portrait of the Apostle Matthew is a fragment from the Maestà, the monumental altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the development of Sienese painting, executed this work during the early fourteenth century. The figure displays the characteristic traits of the Sienese style, which prioritised decorative elegance and refined colour palettes over the more rigid structures found in contemporary Florentine art.

The Apostle is depicted with a weathered, humanised countenance, his grey beard and hair rendered with careful attention to individual strands. He wears a vibrant red tunic beneath a deep blue mantle, colours that provide a stark contrast against the gilded background. The gold leaf, typical of the period, creates a flat, ethereal space that removes the subject from a specific temporal setting. He holds a codex, a common attribute for the evangelist, with his fingers positioned in a subtle gesture of discourse.

Duccio employs a delicate approach to the drapery, using soft highlights to suggest the volume of the fabric beneath the mantle. The surface of the panel shows signs of age, including craquelure that reveals the underlying preparation of the wood support. This piece demonstrates the transition from the Byzantine tradition toward a more naturalistic representation of the human form. The focus remains on the psychological presence of the figure, achieved through the direct gaze and the precise modelling of the facial features.
