Description
A portrait of the Apostle Thaddeus, originally part of the Maestà altarpiece by the Sienese master Duccio di Buoninsegna.
This portrait of the Apostle Thaddeus is a fragment from the Maestà, the monumental altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the development of Sienese painting, executed this work during the early fourteenth century. The panel demonstrates the transition from the rigid Byzantine tradition towards a more humanised approach to religious figures.
The figure of Thaddeus is rendered with a sense of volume beneath his heavy, dark drapery. His gaze is directed slightly away from the viewer, suggesting a contemplative state. The use of tempera allows for subtle gradations in the skin tones, while the gold leaf background provides a flat, celestial space that isolates the subject. The inclusion of a codex, bound in red with decorative elements, identifies the subject as an evangelist or teacher. The lettering flanking the head serves as a clear identification, a common feature in medieval devotional art.
Duccio employed a refined technique to balance the decorative quality of the gold ground with the physical presence of the apostle. The lines of the face are precise, showing an attention to individual character that was beginning to emerge in Italian art of this period. The work remains a primary example of the Sienese aesthetic, which prioritised elegance, linear grace, and a sophisticated use of colour. This print captures the texture of the original wood panel and the delicate application of gold leaf, offering a clear view of the brushwork and the condition of the paint surface. It is a study in the devotional portraiture that defined the religious life of the Italian city-states.
