Charles Meryon produced this etching, L'Abside de Notre-Dame de Paris, during a period when he sought to document the medieval character of the city before the extensive urban renovations led by Baron Haussmann. The work captures the cathedral from the banks of the Seine, presenting a view that balances architectural precision with a moody, atmospheric sky. Meryon was a trained naval officer, and his background in maritime drafting is evident in the disciplined, clean lines used to define the stone buttresses and the intricate tracery of the apse.

In the foreground, the riverbank is populated with small figures, horse-drawn carts, and moored boats, which provide a sense of scale against the massive structure of the cathedral.
