This illustration by Edmund Dulac originates from his celebrated 1907 commission to provide plates for a new edition of Stories from the Arabian Nights. Dulac, a French-born artist who settled in London, became a central figure in the early twentieth-century boom of gift-book publishing. His approach to these tales favoured a synthesis of Persian miniature aesthetics and European watercolour techniques, moving away from the stark black-and-white lines of the Victorian era.

The composition depicts a rider mounted upon a horse, suspended within a cloud-filled sky. The figure wears a turban and flowing garments that catch the wind, suggesting rapid movement through the air. Dulac employs a palette dominated by cool blues, greys, and purples, which creates a sense of nocturnal atmosphere. The moon, rendered as a pale, luminous disc, provides the primary light source for the scene. The horse is depicted with a degree of stylisation, its form simplified to emphasise the grace of its posture against the vast, atmospheric backdrop.

Dulac was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to evoke a sense of wonder through colour. In this work, the application of watercolour allows for soft transitions between the dense, shadowy clouds and the lighter areas surrounding the moon. The artist avoids heavy outlines, preferring to define forms through subtle shifts in tone and colour. This technique contributes to the ethereal quality of the image, aligning with the fantastical nature of the source material.
