The Arrest of Christ - Duccio di Buoninsegna

A detailed reproduction of Duccio's iconic scene depicting the betrayal of Christ, originally part of the monumental Maesta altarpiece.

This panel originates from the reverse side of the Maesta, a large altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the development of Sienese painting, utilised tempera and gold leaf to construct this scene. The composition focuses on the betrayal of Christ by Judas Iscariot, capturing the moment of the kiss amidst a dense crowd of soldiers and disciples.

Duccio employs a gold-leaf background, a convention of the period that flattens the pictorial space while providing a luminous quality to the scene. The figures are arranged in a tight, overlapping formation, which creates a sense of agitation and claustrophobia appropriate to the narrative. The artist pays attention to the individual expressions of the participants, ranging from the calm demeanour of Christ to the aggressive postures of the soldiers carrying spears and torches. The drapery of the garments is rendered with careful attention to volume and fold, reflecting the influence of Byzantine traditions alongside the emerging naturalism of the Italian Trecento.

This work demonstrates the transition from the rigid iconographic styles of the thirteenth century toward a more humanised depiction of biblical events. The use of colour, particularly the contrast between the deep blue of Christ's mantle and the warm oranges and reds of the surrounding figures, directs the viewer's attention to the central interaction. The spears and torches create vertical lines that break the horizontal mass of the crowd, adding structure to the composition. As a fragment of a larger narrative cycle, this panel provides insight into the technical precision and storytelling capabilities of Duccio, whose work defined the aesthetic direction of Sienese art during the early fourteenth century.
