Description
A seminal Pre-Raphaelite work by William Holman Hunt, depicting a woman's sudden moral realisation within a highly symbolic Victorian interior.
Painted in 1853, The Awakening Conscience is a defining work of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. William Holman Hunt depicts a young woman rising from the lap of her lover, her expression caught in a moment of sudden moral realisation. The scene is set in a room filled with symbols of the couple's illicit relationship and the woman's potential for redemption.
Every object in the composition carries specific meaning. The cat playing with a bird beneath the table suggests the woman's current situation, while the discarded glove on the floor hints at her future abandonment. The mirror behind her reflects the sunlit garden, a visual metaphor for the purity and spiritual life she has left behind. Hunt utilised his then-fiancée, Annie Miller, as the model for the woman, and the interior was painted at a house in St John's Wood, London.
The painting is noted for its high level of detail and bright, clear colours, which were characteristic of the Pre-Raphaelite approach to naturalism. Hunt intended the work to function as a moral lesson, showing the transition from a life of sin to one of spiritual awareness. The man, oblivious to the woman's internal change, continues to play the piano, unaware that his companion is mentally departing from their shared life. The work remains a significant example of Victorian narrative art, where domestic interiors are used to explore complex social and moral themes of the era. It is currently held in the collection of the Tate in London.
