Charles-Francois Daubigny is widely recognised for his dedication to painting directly from nature, a practice he facilitated by converting a small boat into a floating studio. This vessel, which he named Le Botin, allowed him to navigate the rivers of France, particularly the Oise and the Seine, to capture the shifting atmospheric conditions of the water and sky. In this work, the artist presents a quiet scene of river life, where the heavy, flat-bottomed barges sit low in the water. The composition is anchored by the vertical lines of the masts, which contrast with the horizontal expanse of the riverbank and the expansive, cloud-filled sky.

Daubigny employs a palette of muted earth tones, greens, and soft greys to render the humid, overcast atmosphere of the French countryside. His brushwork is loose and expressive, particularly in the treatment of the clouds and the reflections upon the water surface.
