John Crome, a central figure of the Norwich School of painters, produced this work during the early nineteenth century. The composition depicts a group of men, known as beaters, resting at the edge of a dense woodland. Their role was to flush out game for hunters, a common sight in the Norfolk countryside that Crome frequently documented. The painting demonstrates his close observation of local flora, particularly the gnarled oaks and the textured undergrowth that define the regional character of East Anglia.

Crome was deeply influenced by seventeenth-century Dutch masters, such as Meindert Hobbema and Jacob van Ruisdael. This influence is visible in his treatment of light and the structured arrangement of the trees, which frame the figures and guide the viewer towards the open horizon on the right. The palette consists of earthy browns, ochres, and muted greens, reflecting the natural tones of the English countryside.
