Léopold Flameng, a Belgian-born printmaker who spent much of his career in France, produced this etching depicting a monastic interior. The work captures the quiet, sombre atmosphere of a cloister, defined by its heavy stone vaulting and rhythmic arches. Flameng employs precise line work to render the textures of the masonry, contrasting the rough stone surfaces with the smooth, deep shadows that pool in the corners of the corridor.

In the centre of the composition, two figures stand within the nave, their forms silhouetted against the light filtering through the open archway.
