Description
A traditional Japanese hanging scroll depicting the Bodhisattva Monju seated on a lion, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts Monju Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, seated upon a lion. The figure is identified by the five topknots in his hair, a convention representing the five syllables of the mantra associated with this deity. In his right hand, he holds a sword, which serves to cut through ignorance, while his left hand supports a lotus flower. The lotus often carries a sacred text, symbolising the Prajnaparamita Sutra.
The composition follows traditional iconographic standards for Buddhist painting in Japan. The Bodhisattva sits in a cross-legged posture atop a large, stylised lion, which stands firmly on lotus pedestals. The lion, with its dark, shaggy mane and fierce expression, provides a contrast to the calm, serene countenance of the deity. The use of gold leaf and mineral pigments on silk creates a refined surface, typical of devotional works produced for temples or private altars during the medieval period.
The background is kept relatively simple, allowing the figure of Monju to occupy the centre of the viewer's attention. The halo behind the head of the Bodhisattva provides a subtle glow, separating the divine figure from the surrounding space. The surrounding silk mounting, decorated with floral patterns, frames the central image and maintains the integrity of the original scroll format. This work reflects the religious practices of the time, where such images were used as objects of meditation and veneration. The precision of the line work and the application of colour demonstrate the technical skill expected of artists working within the Buddhist tradition. The depiction of the lion, while stylised, conveys a sense of power that balances the intellectual and spiritual nature of the Bodhisattva.
