Description
A seminal example of Synthetic Cubism by Juan Gris, featuring a bottle of Banyuls wine rendered through oil paint and collage elements.
Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. In The Bottle of Banyuls, created in 1914, he employs the technique of papier collé, integrating fragments of printed paper directly into the painted surface. This method allows for a dialogue between the literal reality of the newspaper clippings and the constructed reality of the painted forms.
The composition is organised around a rigorous geometric structure. Gris flattens the pictorial space, rejecting traditional perspective in favour of a rhythmic arrangement of overlapping planes. A bottle of Banyuls wine sits to the left, its label clearly legible, while a glass and various paper elements occupy the right side. The background features a patterned surface that suggests a table or wall, rendered with a stippled effect that contrasts with the sharper, flatter shapes of the objects.
Unlike the earlier, more fragmented Analytic Cubism, this work demonstrates the clarity and mathematical precision that defined the mature style of Gris. He treats the objects as components of a larger architectural design, balancing the weight of the bottle against the lighter, more complex forms of the glass and scattered papers. The colour palette is restrained, relying on ochres, browns, and blacks, which allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of shape and texture. By incorporating everyday ephemera, Gris bridges the gap between high art and the mundane objects of modern life, creating a work that is both intellectually demanding and visually coherent.
