Description
A dramatic Venetian Mannerist masterpiece depicting the biblical narrative of the Israelites and the bronze serpent, characterised by dynamic movement and deep chiaroscuro.
The Brazen Serpent is a large-scale work by the Venetian master Tintoretto, painted for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. This composition depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Numbers, where the Israelites are afflicted by venomous snakes as punishment for their lack of faith. Moses instructs them to look upon a bronze serpent mounted on a pole to be healed. Tintoretto organises the scene into two distinct zones: the chaotic, suffering masses in the foreground and the divine intervention occurring in the upper registers.
The lower portion of the canvas is crowded with figures in various states of agony and contortion. Tintoretto uses dramatic lighting to define the musculature and desperate gestures of the afflicted. The figures are rendered with rapid, fluid brushwork, a hallmark of his mature style. The palette is dominated by deep shadows and earthy tones, which contrast with the lighter, more ethereal treatment of the sky and the celestial figures above.
In the upper section, the composition shifts towards a more dynamic, swirling arrangement. Angels and divine entities occupy the clouds, their forms elongated and twisting in typical Mannerist fashion. The verticality of the work is emphasised by the pole bearing the serpent, which acts as a visual anchor amidst the turbulence. Tintoretto avoids static symmetry, opting instead for a diagonal flow that guides the viewer's eye from the suffering below to the salvation above. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex multi-figure narratives while maintaining a sense of urgency and emotional weight. This work remains a primary example of the Venetian approach to religious painting during the late sixteenth century, prioritising dramatic effect and expressive movement over rigid classical order.
