The Burial of Diocrès is a miniature from the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, a manuscript commissioned by Jean, Duke of Berry, and executed by the Limbourg brothers: Herman, Paul, and Jean. This specific scene illustrates the legend of the physician Diocrès, whose corpse miraculously sat up during his funeral to declare his damnation. The composition is typical of the International Gothic style, characterised by a high degree of detail and a clear, narrative focus.

The scene is framed by an elaborate border of ivy leaves, a common decorative element in medieval manuscripts. Within the central frame, the artists depict a solemn funeral procession. Clerics in white robes stand to the left, while mourners in dark and muted tones gather around the open coffin. The perspective is flattened, typical of the period, yet the figures possess a distinct physical presence. The artists employ a palette of blues, reds, and earthy browns, applied with precision to define the folds of garments and the expressions of the figures. The inclusion of a skull and bones in the foreground serves as a memento mori, a reminder of the inevitability of death and the moral weight of the narrative.

This work demonstrates the technical skill of the Limbourg brothers, who were active in the early fifteenth century.
