Description
A detailed manuscript illumination by Jean Fouquet, depicting the funeral procession of the Virgin Mary with characteristic Renaissance depth and colour.
This miniature, The Funeral of the Virgin, originates from the Hours of Étienne Chevalier, a celebrated book of hours commissioned by the treasurer to King Charles VII of France. Jean Fouquet, a master of the French school, demonstrates his command of spatial depth and narrative clarity within the constraints of a small-scale manuscript page. The scene depicts the Apostles carrying the bier of the Virgin Mary, a subject drawn from the Golden Legend.
Fouquet employs a distinct compositional strategy, placing the figures in the foreground against a wide, atmospheric horizon. The landscape, featuring distant mountains and a calm body of water, reflects the influence of contemporary Flemish painting, which Fouquet encountered during his travels in Italy and his exposure to Northern European techniques. The figures are rendered with precise attention to their heavy, draped garments, which are painted in saturated blues, reds, and greens.
Above the procession, a group of angels descends from a cloud-filled sky, their forms echoing the movement of the figures below. The inclusion of soldiers in contemporary armour provides a sense of temporal displacement, a common practice in medieval and Renaissance art to bring biblical events into the viewer's own time. The bottom of the page retains the original Latin text, integrated into the design with decorative flourishes. The work is a fine example of the transition between the Gothic tradition and the emerging naturalism of the Renaissance. The clarity of the light and the careful modelling of the faces demonstrate Fouquet's technical skill, which allowed him to achieve a sense of volume and presence rarely seen in the manuscript illumination of the period.
