This miniature, The Funeral of the Virgin, originates from the Hours of Étienne Chevalier, a celebrated book of hours commissioned by the treasurer to King Charles VII of France. Jean Fouquet, a master of the French school, demonstrates his command of spatial depth and narrative clarity within the constraints of a small-scale manuscript page. The scene depicts the Apostles carrying the bier of the Virgin Mary, a subject drawn from the Golden Legend.

Fouquet employs a distinct compositional strategy, placing the figures in the foreground against a wide, atmospheric horizon. The landscape, featuring distant mountains and a calm body of water, reflects the influence of contemporary Flemish painting, which Fouquet encountered during his travels in Italy and his exposure to Northern European techniques.
