This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts the legendary Chinese sennin, or immortal, Ch'en Nan (known as Chinnan in Japan). Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, operating his own publishing house in Edo. His work often explored themes from Chinese folklore and Taoist mythology, which were popular subjects for the urban audience of the period.

The composition shows Chinnan in a dynamic pose, seated upon a rocky outcrop. He holds a bowl aloft, from which a dragon emerges, rising into the air amidst a series of diagonal lines representing rain or atmospheric energy. The figure is rendered with bold, calligraphic outlines, a hallmark of Shigenaga's style before the full adoption of polychrome printing.
