The Closing Hour - Robert Spencer

Robert Spencer, a member of the New Hope School, produced this work during a period when he focused on the industrial architecture of Pennsylvania. The painting depicts the exterior of a textile mill at the end of a working day. Workers emerge from the dark doorway, moving across the foreground towards a wooden fence. The structure itself dominates the composition, rendered with a palette of muted greys, ochres, and whites that suggest weathered stone or brickwork.

Spencer employs a technique of broken brushwork, characteristic of the Impressionist influence on his practice. He applies paint in short, rhythmic strokes, which creates a sense of texture across the facade of the building. The light appears to be late afternoon, casting long shadows that define the lower portion of the mill. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on idyllic rural scenes, Spencer turned his attention to the mundane reality of industrial life.
