Thomas Shotter Boys was a skilled draughtsman and lithographer, known for his precise documentation of urban environments. This work is part of his celebrated series, 'Original Views of London as it is', published in 1842. The print captures the architectural character of Pall Mall, a street synonymous with the gentleman's clubs of nineteenth-century London. Boys utilised the medium of lithography to achieve a high degree of detail, which he then augmented with delicate watercolour washes to provide atmospheric depth.

The composition employs a wide-angle perspective, drawing the eye down the thoroughfare towards the distant spire of St Martin-in-the-Fields. On the right, the imposing facade of the Reform Club, designed by Charles Barry, dominates the scene. The street level is populated with figures in period dress, horse-drawn carriages, and the everyday activity of a busy metropolitan centre. Boys was trained as an engraver, and this background is evident in the clean, controlled lines that define the stonework and iron railings. The sky is rendered with soft, translucent washes, suggesting the changeable weather typical of the British capital.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on romanticised or idealised views, Boys sought to record the city with a sense of objective clarity. His work provides a valuable record of London's architectural evolution during the early Victorian period. The balance between the rigid geometry of the buildings and the fluid, human elements of the street scene creates a sense of place that remains recognisable today.
