Description
A genre painting by Pietro Longhi depicting a domestic scene of musicians and card players in an eighteenth-century Venetian interior.
Pietro Longhi, a Venetian painter, produced this work during the mid-eighteenth century. The painting depicts a domestic interior where a group of figures engages in musical performance and card games. Longhi is recognised for his documentation of Venetian social life, focusing on the daily activities of the aristocracy and the merchant class.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. On the right, two musicians play violins, accompanied by sheet music placed upon a table draped in a heavy, patterned red cloth. A small dog sits on a stool nearby, observing the scene. To the left, a group of figures sits around a smaller table, occupied with a game of cards. The figures are dressed in the fashion of the period, including tricorne hats and cloaks.
The interior space is rendered with attention to texture, from the heavy drapery of the wall coverings to the ornate chandelier suspended above. Longhi employs a muted palette, allowing the red of the table cover to draw the eye. The lighting is soft, suggesting an indoor setting illuminated by candles or daylight filtering through unseen windows. This work provides a view into the private leisure activities of the Venetian elite, capturing a moment of quiet social interaction. The figures appear absorbed in their respective tasks, creating a sense of stillness within the room. Longhi avoids grand historical narratives, preferring the observation of contemporary manners and customs. His approach to genre painting offers a record of the material culture of Venice, including the textiles, furniture, and musical instruments common to the homes of the period.
