Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, produced this mezzotint during the final years of the seventeenth century. The work depicts a travelling peddler or charlatan, a common figure in Dutch genre scenes of the period. His expression is one of exaggerated joviality, typical of the caricatured style Dusart employed to depict lower-class life.
