Description
A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai, featuring the courtesan Hitomachi and her attendants in traditional attire from the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts the courtesan Hitomachi, accompanied by two young attendants, or kamuro. The work belongs to the series Hinagata wakana no hatsu moyō, which translates to A Pattern Book of the Year’s First Designs, Fresh as Spring Herbs. Koryūsai, a former samurai who turned to printmaking, gained recognition for his refined depictions of women and his mastery of the hashira-e, or pillar print, format.
In this composition, Hitomachi occupies the centre, her stature emphasised by the vertical orientation of the print. She wears a kimono adorned with crane motifs, a symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture. The two attendants flank her, mirroring her posture and dress, which creates a balanced, rhythmic visual arrangement. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted reds, and charcoal tones typical of the mid-Edo period.
Koryūsai employs fine, controlled lines to define the facial features and the delicate folds of the fabric. The background is left plain, a common technique in ukiyo-e that directs the viewer's attention to the figures and their elaborate attire. The print functions as a fashion plate, documenting the styles worn by high-ranking courtesans in the Yoshiwara district. The cartouche in the upper right corner provides the series title, while the artist's signature appears in the lower right. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the floating world, where fashion and status were central to the social identity of the urban elite.
