Description

A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada, depicting two elegant courtesans and their attendants walking through the rain.

This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicts two high-ranking courtesans, Hanamurasaki and Koshikibu, from the Tamaya house. They are shown during an outdoor procession, shielded from the rain by large, patterned umbrellas. The composition is split across two panels, a common format for ukiyo-e prints of the period, allowing for a wider narrative scope. Each courtesan is accompanied by young attendants, known as kamuro, who assist with their elaborate garments and accessories.

The print demonstrates the technical skill of the Edo period printmakers. Kunisada uses a palette of yellow, red, and deep green to define the heavy, layered kimonos worn by the women. The patterns on the fabric are rendered with precision, showing the fashion trends of the time. The rain is suggested by thin, diagonal lines crossing the composition, a stylistic choice that adds a sense of atmosphere without obscuring the figures. The faces are drawn in the conventional style of the era, with small features and white-powdered skin, reflecting the aesthetic ideals associated with the Yoshiwara pleasure district.

Kunisada was a prolific artist, and his work often focused on the lives of actors and courtesans. This piece captures the performative nature of the courtesan's public appearance. Every element, from the hair ornaments to the specific folds of the robes, is designed to communicate the status and identity of the subjects. The print provides a window into the visual culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where the theatre and the pleasure quarters were primary sources of entertainment and fashion. The work remains a clear example of the ukiyo-e tradition, prioritising decorative line and flat colour fields to create a balanced, stylised image.
