Hans Baldung, often known as Baldung Grien, produced this panel as part of a larger series depicting the creation of the world. The composition presents a theological narrative through a distinctively Northern Renaissance lens. God the Father appears twice within the frame, a common convention of the period to show sequential actions in a single space. On the left, He stands with an outstretched arm, gesturing toward the newly formed creatures. In the foreground, He kneels to attend to the creation of Eve, who emerges from the side of the sleeping Adam.

The scene is populated by a diverse array of fauna, ranging from the mundane to the mythical. A unicorn stands near the centre, its presence adding a layer of medieval symbolism to the biblical account. The animals are rendered with a focus on individual character, yet they occupy a space that feels somewhat compressed, typical of Baldung's approach to spatial depth. The palette is dominated by the deep, saturated red of the robes worn by the Creator, which provides a visual anchor against the cooler tones of the distant landscape and the pale flesh of the figures.

Baldung's work is characterised by a certain psychological tension and a departure from the strict naturalism of his contemporaries. His figures often possess elongated proportions and expressive features. The sky is filled with birds in flight, creating a sense of movement that contrasts with the stillness of the kneeling Creator. This piece offers a view into the sixteenth-century German approach to religious art, where the divine and the earthly are brought into close proximity through precise brushwork and a clear, narrative structure. The panel remains a clear example of the artist's ability to synthesise complex theological concepts into a singular, readable image.
