Description
A masterful late fifteenth-century engraving by Martin Schongauer, depicting the Crucifixion with four angels collecting the blood of Christ.
Martin Schongauer was a master of the burin, and this engraving demonstrates his technical precision during the late fifteenth century. The composition centres on the figure of Christ on the cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. Four angels surround the cross, each holding a chalice to collect the blood flowing from Christ's wounds. This iconography reflects the theological focus on the Eucharist common in the period.
Schongauer employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define form and texture. The drapery of the figures is rendered with deep, flowing folds that suggest volume and weight. The background features a distant, hilly terrain with a small town, providing a sense of spatial depth that contrasts with the foreground figures. The inclusion of a skull and bone at the base of the cross serves as a traditional memento mori, reminding the viewer of mortality.
As a leading figure in German printmaking, Schongauer influenced many subsequent artists, including Albrecht Dürer. His ability to balance narrative clarity with decorative detail is evident here, particularly in the delicate rendering of the angels' wings and the expressive faces of the mourners. The print is signed with his characteristic monogram, M+S, located at the bottom centre. This work remains a primary example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved in early European printmaking, where the artist controlled every line to create light, shadow, and emotional resonance without the use of colour.
