Ivan Aivazovsky is widely recognised for his mastery of marine painting, yet his travels through the Caucasus mountains allowed him to apply his atmospheric sensibilities to terrestrial subjects. The Daryal Canyon, a narrow passage in the Caucasus Mountains, provided the artist with a dramatic subject that allowed for a study of light, scale, and geological form. In this work, the towering rock faces dominate the composition, creating a sense of enclosure that contrasts with the small, human figures navigating the path in the lower left corner.
