A powerful Baroque composition by Guercino, depicting the body of Christ attended by two mourning angels through dramatic use of light and shadow.

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino, produced this composition during his early period in Cento. The work displays the dramatic chiaroscuro that defined his approach to the Baroque style. The scene depicts the body of Christ, supported by two angels, positioned against a dark, atmospheric background. The lighting is focused, casting strong illumination upon the torso of Christ while leaving the surrounding space in deep shadow. This technique directs the viewer's attention to the physical reality of the figure, emphasising the weight and stillness of the body.

The two angels provide a contrast in both colour and posture. One angel, dressed in deep crimson, gazes towards the viewer with a solemn expression, while the other, in shades of violet and brown, leans forward in a gesture of grief.
