This engraving by Cornelis Cort, dated 1573, depicts the biblical scene of Pentecost. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who sits surrounded by the Apostles within a structured, architectural interior. Above them, the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove, radiating light that illuminates the figures below. Small flames, representing the tongues of fire described in the Acts of the Apostles, hover above the heads of those gathered.

Cort was a Dutch engraver who moved to Italy, where he became highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to translate the complex compositions of Italian masters into the medium of print. His work is characterised by a sophisticated use of line to create volume and texture. In this piece, the cross-hatching and varied line weights define the folds of drapery and the architectural elements of the room, providing a sense of depth and weight to the figures. The perspective is carefully constructed, drawing the eye toward the central light source.

As a printmaker, Cort played a role in the dissemination of Italian Renaissance and Mannerist styles throughout Northern Europe. His collaboration with publishers in Rome, such as the imprint mentioned at the base of the plate, allowed his work to reach a wide audience. This print demonstrates his mastery of the burin, showing how he could manipulate light and shadow to convey a sense of divine presence within a grounded, human setting. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and expressive gestures typical of the period, reflecting the influence of his time spent working with artists like Titian and Girolamo Muziano.
