John Martin, a figure of the British Romantic period, possessed a singular vision for the sublime and the catastrophic. In this work, he depicts the biblical narrative of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea, while the Egyptian army is overwhelmed by the returning waters. The composition is dominated by a low horizon line, which allows the sky to occupy the majority of the frame.
