Jean Fouquet, a master of the French school, demonstrates his command of spatial composition and colour within the confines of a small vellum leaf. The scene depicts the death of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by the Apostles, while Christ appears above in a mandorla of golden light to receive her soul.

Fouquet employs a distinct division between the earthly and celestial realms. The lower portion of the composition is grounded in the physical reality of the Apostles gathered around the deathbed, their garments rendered in deep reds, greens, and blues. The figures exhibit a sense of weight and volume, reflecting the influence of Italian perspective that Fouquet encountered during his travels.
