The Feast of the Bean King was a popular custom where a bean hidden within a cake determined the temporary monarch of the evening. The individual who discovered the bean was crowned and presided over the festivities, a role depicted here by the elderly man wearing a paper crown at the head of the table.

Metsu employs a chiaroscuro technique, using the warm, flickering light from the hearth to illuminate the figures while casting the remainder of the interior into shadow. The composition focuses on the domestic interaction of the group. A woman in a white cap sits to the right, observing the scene, while a child is seated in a wooden high chair nearby. The table is set with simple fare, reflecting the everyday life of the period. Metsu demonstrates his ability to render textures, from the crisp folds of the white tablecloth to the heavy fabric of the clothing worn by the participants.
