Description
A classic Dutch Golden Age history painting by Ferdinand Bol, depicting the biblical discovery of the infant Moses by the daughter of Pharaoh.
Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this large-scale history painting during the height of the Dutch Golden Age. The work depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Exodus, where the daughter of Pharaoh discovers the infant Moses in a basket among the reeds of the Nile. Bol employs a classical approach to the human figure, placing the scene within a wooded, atmospheric setting that draws upon the traditions of seventeenth-century Dutch painting.
The composition is arranged with a focus on the central group of women. Their pale, luminous skin tones contrast with the darker, earthy palette of the surrounding forest and the overcast sky. Bol uses light to guide the viewer across the canvas, from the kneeling figure reaching toward the water to the standing princess who observes the discovery. The treatment of the foliage and the distant, hazy horizon demonstrates the artist's ability to balance narrative clarity with a sense of natural space.
Unlike the more dramatic chiaroscuro often associated with his teacher, Bol here adopts a smoother, more refined application of paint. The figures possess a sculptural quality, reflecting the influence of contemporary classicism that gained popularity in the Netherlands during the mid-seventeenth century. The painting remains a representative example of how biblical subjects were adapted to suit the aesthetic preferences of the period, prioritising grace and balanced proportions over raw emotional intensity. The work is currently held in the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp.
