Description
A wood engraving from the 1852 series Die Bibel in Bildern, depicting the first day of creation with classical precision.
This wood engraving originates from the celebrated series Die Bibel in Bildern, or The Bible in Pictures, by the German artist Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. First published in Leipzig between 1852 and 1860, this collection of 240 plates aimed to provide a visual narrative of the Old and New Testaments. Schnorr von Carolsfeld was a member of the Nazarene movement, a group of nineteenth-century German painters who sought to return to the honesty and spiritual clarity found in early Renaissance art.
The composition depicts the first day of creation, capturing the moment when light is separated from darkness. The figure of the Creator is shown with arms outstretched, suspended amidst swirling clouds and radiating beams of light. The artist employs a precise, linear style characteristic of the wood engraving technique, using fine hatching to model the drapery of the robes and the texture of the clouds. The focus remains on the clarity of the form and the gravity of the subject matter, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation.
Below the image, the original German text from the first chapter of Genesis is included, providing the scriptural context for the scene. The work reflects the artist's dedication to biblical illustration, a project that occupied him for many years. His approach is marked by a balance between classical composition and a sincere, devotional aesthetic. This print offers a clear example of the graphic work produced by the Nazarenes, who prioritised narrative legibility and moral seriousness in their art. The print is presented here with the original plate number and typography, maintaining the historical character of the nineteenth-century publication.
