Description
A detailed Flemish engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicting the Flagellation of Christ, executed with precise burin work and classical Mannerist technique.
This engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicts the Flagellation of Christ, a subject frequently explored by the Wierix family of printmakers in Antwerp. The composition centres on the figure of Christ, bound to a column, while his tormentors surround him with instruments of punishment. Wierix employs a precise, controlled burin technique to define the musculature of the central figure and the varied textures of the clothing worn by the figures on the periphery. The lighting is dramatic, emanating from an unseen source to cast deep shadows that define the forms within the confined space.
The print includes a Latin inscription at the base, taken from the Book of Isaiah, chapter 53, which provides theological context for the scene. The inclusion of the artist's signature and the phrase 'Cum Gratia et Privilegio' indicates that this work was produced under the legal protections afforded to printmakers in the Southern Netherlands during the late sixteenth century. The Wierix brothers were known for their technical proficiency and their ability to produce small-scale devotional images that were widely circulated across Europe. This particular work demonstrates the characteristic Northern Mannerist approach to anatomy and narrative, where the emotional intensity of the subject is balanced by the technical rigour of the engraving process. The lines are fine and deliberate, creating a sense of volume and weight that is typical of the period's print culture. This piece serves as an example of the high standard of craftsmanship maintained by the Antwerp workshops, which supplied both religious institutions and private collectors with high-quality devotional imagery.
