Charles-François Daubigny was a central figure in the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who prioritised direct observation of nature. This etching, titled The Ford, demonstrates his technical mastery of the medium. Daubigny utilised a variety of line weights to define the textures of the foliage, the water, and the cattle. The composition is anchored by a large, leaning tree that provides shade for the herd, while the open expanse of the riverbank draws the eye toward the horizon.

Daubigny was an advocate for plein air painting, often working from his boat, the Botin, which he converted into a floating studio.
