It reproduces a painting by Claude Lorrain, dated 1656, which was held in the collection of Dr Richard Mead at the time of the print's production. Vivares, a French engraver who spent much of his career in London, was instrumental in popularising the reproduction of Old Master paintings through high-quality printmaking.
