This panel represents February or early spring, capturing a transition between the harshness of winter and the coming thaw. The composition is dominated by a heavy, overcast sky that presses down upon a rugged, mountainous terrain. Bruegel employs a high vantage point, allowing the viewer to survey both the immediate foreground activities and the distant, storm-tossed sea.

In the foreground, figures engage in daily tasks: a man prunes a tree, a woman gathers brushwood, and others tend to a small fire.
