A delicate Ukiyo-e depiction of the Shinto deities Izanagi and Izanami standing upon the Floating Bridge of Heaven, attributed to Nishikawa Sukenobu.
This work depicts the Shinto creation myth involving the deities Izanagi and Izanami. According to the Kojiki, these two figures stood upon the Floating Bridge of Heaven, stirring the primordial ocean below with a jewelled spear. The droplets falling from the spear formed the first islands of Japan. Nishikawa Sukenobu, a prominent artist of the Edo period, captures the pair in a moment of quiet contemplation. They are positioned on a curved, cloud-like bridge that extends over a vast, calm expanse of water. A small, newly formed landmass is visible in the lower right, representing the nascent earth. Sukenobu is known for his contributions to book illustration and his focus on the human form within the Ukiyo-e tradition. His style here is restrained, favouring delicate line work and a muted palette that aligns with the ethereal nature of the subject. The figures wear traditional robes, rendered with subtle patterns that suggest texture without overwhelming the composition. The surrounding mount, featuring decorative floral motifs, provides a formal frame for the central narrative. The artist's signature and seal are present on the left side, confirming the attribution to his studio. This piece reflects the period's interest in classical literature and mythology, presenting a narrative scene that balances human grace with the vastness of the cosmos. The composition is deliberately sparse, directing the viewer's attention to the interaction between the two deities as they prepare to shape the world. The silk support adds a soft, luminous quality to the colours, which have aged to produce a harmonious, earthy tone throughout the work.
