Rodolphe Bresdin was a French printmaker known for his obsessive attention to detail and his capacity to construct dense, dreamlike environments. The Good Samaritan, executed in 1861, represents the peak of his technical ability in lithography. The composition features a small, central narrative scene depicting the biblical parable, yet this human element is almost entirely consumed by the surrounding wilderness.

Bresdin fills the frame with a chaotic, overgrown forest. Every square centimetre of the paper is covered with fine, scratchy marks that define foliage, gnarled branches, and exotic plants. The artist employs a high degree of contrast, using the black ink to create deep shadows that suggest a sense of mystery or unease. The sky, filled with swirling, turbulent clouds, adds to the atmospheric pressure of the scene.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on clear, legible compositions, Bresdin preferred to overwhelm the viewer with visual information. The viewer must search the dark, textured thickets to locate the figures of the Samaritan and the injured traveller. This approach forces a slow, deliberate engagement with the print. The work demonstrates his unique ability to blend natural observation with a fantastical, almost hallucinatory imagination. It remains a singular example of nineteenth-century printmaking, reflecting the artist's solitary and unconventional approach to his craft.
