This triptych by Utagawa Kunisada depicts a gathering of warriors from the Japanese adaptation of the Chinese classic novel, the Shuihu Zhuan. Known as the Suikoden in Japan, this narrative follows a group of outlaws who assemble to oppose corrupt officials. Kunisada, a prolific master of the Utagawa school, captures the figures with the dramatic intensity associated with kabuki theatre, a common influence on his characterisations.

The composition is arranged across three panels, creating a dense field of figures.
