This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a collection of fifty-two stories told by a parrot to its mistress over successive nights. Produced during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, this manuscript represents an early phase of the Mughal school, where Persian stylistic conventions merged with indigenous Indian artistic traditions. The scene depicts a hunter presenting a parrot to the king of Kamarupa, a narrative moment captured with precise attention to courtly gesture and architectural detail.

Basavana, a master of the Mughal atelier, employs a flattened perspective typical of the period. The composition is divided into a primary narrative space and a lower register containing Persian script. The figures are rendered with clear outlines and a palette of saturated pigments, including lapis lazuli blues and vermilion reds, accented by gold leaf. The king sits upon a raised platform, his posture relaxed yet authoritative, while the hunter stands before him, gesturing towards the bird. The surrounding figures, seated in a semi-circle, observe the exchange, their clothing and headgear reflecting the diverse cultural influences present at the Mughal court.

The architectural elements, such as the arched pavilion and the patterned wall coverings, provide a structured environment for the figures. The use of gold in the upper canopy and the decorative borders adds a sense of luxury, consistent with the production of imperial manuscripts. This work demonstrates the synthesis of Persian calligraphic elegance and the observational clarity that would define later Mughal painting. The inclusion of text within the composition integrates the visual narrative with the literary source, a common practice in manuscript illumination of the sixteenth century.
