This print is plate 19 from the second volume of 'Travels in the Interior of North America', a publication documenting the 1832-1834 expedition led by Prince Maximilian of Wied. Karl Bodmer, a Swiss painter, accompanied the expedition to record the geography, flora, fauna, and indigenous cultures of the American West. His work provides a detailed visual record of the Mandan people, a group whose traditional way of life was documented shortly before the devastating smallpox epidemic of 1837.

The composition captures the interior of a large, circular earth lodge. Light filters through the smoke hole in the roof, illuminating the central figures seated around a fire. The surrounding space is filled with domestic and ceremonial objects, including weapons, shields, and animal skins, which are rendered with precise attention to texture and form. Bodmer employs a controlled use of light and shadow to create a sense of depth within the confined space, while the muted colour palette reflects the natural materials of the lodge and the dim lighting conditions.
