Petrus Christus, a successor to Jan van Eyck in Bruges, produced this depiction of the Lamentation during the mid-fifteenth century. The composition focuses on the body of Christ, supported by the Virgin Mary, while other figures gather in a rocky, desolate setting. The artist employs the characteristic oil technique of the period, allowing for precise rendering of textures, from the heavy folds of the drapery to the subtle play of light upon the skin. The figures occupy a space that balances emotional gravity with a structured, almost sculptural arrangement.
