Description
A detailed diptych by Jan van Eyck depicting the Crucifixion and the Last Judgment, rendered with the technical precision of the Early Netherlandish school.
This diptych presents a dual narrative of Christian theology, divided into two distinct vertical panels. The left panel depicts the Crucifixion, showing the moment of Christ's death on the cross amidst a crowded scene of soldiers, mourners, and onlookers. The composition employs a high horizon line, allowing for a detailed view of the figures in the foreground and the distant city architecture. The right panel represents the Last Judgment, organised into three horizontal tiers. At the top, Christ sits in judgment, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, with angels bearing the instruments of the Passion. The middle section features the resurrection of the dead, with Saint Michael the Archangel standing as a guardian figure. The bottom section depicts the harrowing imagery of Hell, where a skeletal figure presides over the damned in a chaotic, dark abyss.
Jan van Eyck, a master of the Early Netherlandish school, demonstrates his technical precision through the application of oil paint. The work displays a meticulous attention to texture, from the folds of heavy drapery to the metallic sheen of armour and the anatomical details of the figures. The use of light creates a sense of volume and space, particularly in the atmospheric treatment of the sky and the distant mountains. The frames of the panels are inscribed with Latin text, a common feature in devotional works of this period, which provides scriptural context for the scenes depicted. This diptych reflects the period's preoccupation with mortality and divine justice, rendered with a level of observation that characterises the Northern Renaissance tradition.
